This time I want to explain a few of Word Web’s special features.
How the Real World Words concept
helps students, namely by pointing out some words that we see or hear every day but often do not give much thought to. Some of these are acronyms, such as ATM, CEO, Jeep, and more.
On the Field, On the Road
other Real World Words are the names of sports teams like: Utah Jazz (what’s the connection of Utah and jazz?), Baltimore Orioles and the New York Knicks (what IS a Knickerbocker, anyway?). Vehicle names figure in, too. Caprice (Chevy), Intrepid (Dodge), Odyssey (Honda). How many students would know what an intrigue is or a caprice? Why have automakers chosen those names? Would you?
Architectural Terms
are included in my Real World Word grouping. How many students can describe four basic roof styles or know the names of the three main types of columns? It’s so easy for students (and adults) to absorb this material while using Word Web. Getting in touch with our real world but learning the meaning of terms is really eye and ear opening!
